Pre-race essentials

Packing for the Rome Marathon is about being prepared without carrying too much. Historic streets, cobblestones and changeable spring weather call for reliable shoes, flexible layers, familiar nutrition and a small system for keeping essentials organised. Use this checklist the evening before so race morning stays calm.

Shoes and foot care

  • Bring the shoes you have already tested on long runs. Never race in a new pair.
  • Pack technical socks, plus a clean dry pair for after the finish.
  • Carry blister plasters, tape, spare laces and anti-chafing balm.
  • Bring comfortable recovery shoes or slip-on trainers.

Race kit and weather layers

  • Use your familiar race top, shorts, tights or skort.
  • Pack a lightweight windbreaker or waterproof shell for a cool or wet morning.
  • Add thin gloves, a buff, hat and sunglasses according to the forecast.
  • Choose comfortable, secure clothing that lets you adjust quickly on uneven stone.

Nutrition and hydration

  • Pack the gels, chews or bars used during training, with a couple of extras.
  • Bring electrolytes if they are part of your normal plan.
  • Prepare a familiar breakfast such as a bagel, banana, oats or an energy bar.
  • Carry a post-race snack and drink so you are not dependent on finding food immediately.

Documents, phone and logistics

  • Keep ID, race confirmation, accommodation details and emergency contacts together.
  • Charge your phone and watch, and pack a small power bank if needed.
  • Download offline maps and screenshot the route from your hotel to the start.
  • Use a waterproof pouch for documents and phone.
  • Prepare cash or a card and any transit information you may need.

Recovery kit

  • Pack dry clothes, warm socks, a comfortable layer and recovery shoes.
  • Bring compression socks only if you already use them.
  • Add a small towel, stretching strap or massage ball if useful.
  • Keep water and an easy snack ready for the finish.

Hotel-room preparation

Lay out your bib, shoes, socks, nutrition and clothing the night before. Put your phone, watch and charger together, set alarms, confirm transport times and keep a tiny repair kit with safety pins, tape and scissors. Practise the layout during a long training run so you know what is genuinely useful.

What not to bring

  • Do not bring new shoes, clothing or nutrition.
  • Avoid bulky valuables, unnecessary electronics and full-size toiletries.
  • Do not pack too many heavy layers; light adaptable clothing works better.

How to organise a small race bag

Use a waist pack or light running vest for your phone, a few gels, ID, cash and blister plasters. Put frequently used items in the front and keep everything in small pouches. If you use bag drop, separate race essentials from the warm clothing you will collect later. A familiar, compact kit leaves you free to enjoy Rome’s course and finish with confidence.
